Human resilience and planetary resilience… they are tightly linked. Yet when we talk about climate, we tend to leave food off the table, so to speak. Yet, “…our food choices play a significant role in the biggest environmental challenges of our time. Just as the food we choose to eat is part of the problem, thankfully it is also the solution.”
The Game Changers, a groundbreaking documentary filmed over a five-year period, is an entertaining and enlightening look at what it really takes to help the planet, to reverse and prevent disease, and to boost energy, strength, and overall health. The film, which just premiered globally, follows James Wilks, a combatives instructor for the US military and former UFC fighter, on his odyssey from injury to peak performance as he travels the world speaking to leading medical experts, academics, and elite athletes. Along the way, he busts the meat/protein myth, kicks some tires with record-breaking strongman Patrik Baboumian, unearths some Roman gladiators, and pulls the plug on the Paleo diet.
Some key take-aways:
- “According to researchers from Oxford, meat, dairy, egg and fish farming use 83% of the world’s farmland, yet provide only 18% of the world’s calories.
- In the US, where per capita meat consumption is three times the global average, shifting away from an animal-based diet would reduce agricultural emissions by up to 73%, and save one million liters of water per person, per year.
- Globally, shifting away from meat would free up 3.1 billion hectares, an area the size of all of Africa, taking pressure off the world’s most endangered ecosystems and species.
- More than 60% of all global deaths are due to chronic diseases and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers, with poor diet considered a major contributory factor in all of them.”
The documentary (executive produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, Lewis Hamilton, Novak Djokovic, and Chris Paul), while sobering in its message, is also hopeful, great fun, and may just save your life.
